This question was the focus of the event "AI and administration - how do they fit together?", which took place on 7 May 2025 at the Weser Renaissance Museum Schloss Brake in Lemgo. The format was organised by the Institute Industrial IT (inIT) of the Technische Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (TH OWL) together with the Lippe Regional Association and the Old Hanseatic City of Lemgo as part of the AI Academy OWL. Speaker and AI expert Prof. Dr. Markus Lange-Hegermann, member of the inIT board, led through the morning and provided key perspectives on the use of AI in an administrative context, which he explained in a practical manner.
AI explained clearly: potentials and limitations in an administrative context
Around 100 interested participants were given an in-depth insight into the fundamentals, applications and challenges of AI. Markus Lange-Hegermann began by introducing the central concepts of machine learning. This was followed by a discussion of possible applications of large language models such as ChatGPT in everyday administration, for example to support standard enquiries, document management or text generation.
An interactive part with practical exercises on prompting invited participants to gain their own experience with AI systems. The workshop highlighted not only the opportunities but also the limitations of current technologies, particularly with regard to data protection, fairness and explainability.
Exchange in a historical ambience
The open atmosphere in the Weser Renaissance Museum Schloss Brake provided space for lively discussions and an active interdisciplinary exchange - both with the speaker Markus Lange-Hegermann and among the participants. During the lunch that followed, the morning's impulses were deepened and new contacts were made. In particular, the employees of the university and the Old Hanseatic City of Lemgo networked with each other and with interested members of the public. The event thus contributed to regional networking and knowledge transfer and underlined the importance of open dialogue for the joint shaping of digital developments.
"The enormous response shows how great the interest is in practical formats on the topic of AI, including in the administrative context," summarised Markus Lange-Hegermann. "Such events promote understanding of new technologies and strengthen regional networking."
