First manual demonstration drive at Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport

NeMo.bil project reaches next milestone

The first demonstration drives with a NeMo.bil cab were carried out in the NeMo.bil project. The project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), is developing a pioneering concept for sustainable mobility in rural areas - with the central involvement of inIT.

First drives as a prelude to the test phase

The NeMo.bil project is progressing successfully: the first manual demonstration drives of a NeMo.bil cab in the non-public area have now taken place with the project participants at Paderborn/Lippstadt airport. This marks the beginning of an extensive test phase. Automated drives in public areas in the Paderborn region are also planned for the near future.

Rethinking mobility - sustainable, personalised and automated

The aim of the project is to establish a new mobility concept that combines the advantages of public transport with the comfort of a personal vehicle. Two types of vehicle are used: swarms of smaller vehicles (cabs) cover the first and last few kilometres and join together to form a convoy over longer distances, which is pulled by a larger vehicle (Pro). With extensive work in the areas of development, engineering, authorisation and testing, the project is currently right on schedule.

The Initiative Neue Mobilität Paderborn e.V. (NeMo), which initiated the project and has more than 70 members from business, science and local authorities, is pursuing an ambitious vision: to think about mobility holistically and to create a sustainable mobility ecosystem.

"We don't just talk, we do! Based on small and light vehicles that are powered by electricity, we are achieving a level of efficiency that is unique in Germany. NeMo.bil is pursuing a new approach: we are picking people up at their doorsteps, especially in rural areas, and thus providing new impetus for resource-saving and individual public transport that connects urban and rural areas," emphasise NeMo board members Andreas Speith, Christoph Rüther, Michael Heinemann and Simone Probst.

inIT develops driving function for the Cabs

A central work package is being realised by inIT. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ulrich Büker, his research group ‘Intelligent Systems’ is working on the automated driving function of the Cabs. Together with other project partners, the safety requirements are being defined, the sensors integrated and the control software implemented.

"We are delighted to be a partner in this pioneering project. NeMo.bil offers the opportunity to rethink mobility in rural areas - safe, efficient and demand-driven," says Ulrich Büker.

An automated cab will be unveiled in the summer, and will soon be driving in public areas with a security guard. The results of the approval process so far make the consortium very optimistic that the common goals will be achieved.
